The butterfly is the symbol of this building. In ancient Greek and Latin mythology, the butterfly was often used as a symbol of both the soul and the mind. In Latvian folklore, there is a belief that if you see a white butterfly for the first time in spring, the summer will be bright and joyful.
The concept of the project was based on creating an environment that would not be associated with a hospital or suffering for children, young people, and their loved ones. During the design process, the building's layout took on the shape of butterfly wings, with each wing housing one of the medical departments. This symbolic meaning is further emphasized by the building's white cladding and glass panels at the ends, reflecting both the sky and surrounding trees, as well as a three-dimensional stylized butterfly resting on the main entrance façade.
